To obtain your pistol permit in the state of New York, you must have the proper eligibility and complete the correct steps of the application process. Part of this process includes taking safety and pistol permit courses to ensure you are qualified to carry or travel with a gun.
At Blackhawk Training Academy, we offer the courses necessary to obtain your pistol permit. Our courses cover operational safety and the steps necessary to file for your pistol permit. We welcome students from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Batavia, Canandaigua, and the surrounding areas.
Take both Florida and Utah Classes for $195.
This course is required by law for those over 21 who meet the eligibility requirements for the Utah Non-Resident Pistol Permit. This course is for those living outside Utah, who would like the benefit of traveling outside New York State with a concealed firearm in 30 states. While a NYS permit is NOT required to take this course, the Utah permit is NOT VALID within NYS, and therefore cannot be used to purchase, possess, transport, handle, carry, or use a firearm in NYS. Pistol permits generally arrive at your door 60 to 70 business days after your paperwork is received in Utah.
Course includes: Utah Concealed Firearm Act Class, handgun safety, Utah application and self-addressed envelope, passport photo, copy of driver’s license, fingerprints, and upon completion, an instructor’s stamp. All you need to do is go to the post office and mail it out. (No handgun required for this class.)
4 Hour Course: For those living outside the State of Utah, who would like the benefit of traveling outside NY State with a concealed firearm in 30 states. While a NY State permit is NOT required to take this course, the Utah permit is NOT VALID within NY State, and therefore cannot be used to purchase, possess, transport, handle, carry or use a firearm in NY State. Permits generally arrive at your door 60 to 70 business days after your paperwork is received in Utah. Course Includes: UTAH Concealed Firearm Act Class, Handgun Safety, UTAH Application and self addressed envelope, Passport Photo, copy of Drivers License, Fingerprints and upon completion Instructors Stamp.(All you need to do, is go to the Post Office and Mail it out.) Florida Concealed Firearms Safety Course ($100.00)
Take both Florida and Utah Classes for $195.
This course is required by the Florida Department of Agriculture for those individuals having not received formal firearms safety training (i.e.: military, law enforcement, NRA training, etc.). Florida requires firearms safety training in order to be eligible to apply for your Florida Concealed Firearms Permit. This training is partially held in the classroom, and partially “live fire” range time. Participants are required to be observed loading and safely firing their handgun.
Course includes: handgun/firearms safety, range safety, live fire, passport photo, fingerprints, safety course certificate, and the Florida Concealed Firearms Permit application.
(NYS Pistol Permit and registered handgun is required for this class.)
Florida Concealed Firearms Safety Course ($100.00)
4HR Course(with possibility of 8HR if range time needed): Required by the Florida Department of Agriculture, for those individuals having not received formal Firearms Safety Training (ie: Military, Law Enforcement, NRA Training, etc.) Florida requires firearms safety training in order to be eligible to apply for your Florida Concealed Firearms Permit. This training is partial classroom, and “Live Fire” range time. Participants are required to be observed loading and safely fire their handgun. Course Includes: Handgun/Firearms Safety, Range Safety, Live Fire. Passport Photo, Fingerprints, Safety Course Certificate and the Florida Concealed Firearms Permit Application. ****IF YOU ALREADY HAVE PRIOR FIREARMS TRAINING OR ARE EX-MILITARY, LAW ENFORCEMENT, ARMED SECURITY GUARD, OR A FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR THEN YOU DO NOT NEED RANGE TIME AND THE CLASS WILL ONLY BE 4HRS***** (NYS Pistol Permit and registered handgun is required for this class) (Take both Florida and Utah Classes for $195.00)
This course is designed for individuals that have or are planning to apply for their New York State pistol permit. Even though the county you are applying in may not require this course, it becomes the pistol permit holder’s responsibility to understand and apply gun safety and the law. (“Ignorance of the law is not a justification.”)
Pistol Permit Course includes: Nomenclature of handguns, handgun selection for carry, fundamentals of shooting, ammunition options and purposes, handgun malfunctions, cleaning, and care and storage. Students will learn about NYS Article 400: Licensing and other provisions relating to firearms and NYS Article 35: Defense of Justification (Use of Force), as well as receiving a certificate of completion. (No handgun required for this class.)
This is a 16-hour course required by NYS prior to applying for the Pistol Permit.
This Firearms Safety Course is required by the recent changes to NYS Law in order to obtain a NYS Pistol Permit. This 16hr course is conducted by a Certified Firearms Instructors. Subject taught include, firearms safety, loading and unloading a pistol or revolver, justification for the use of deadly force under NYS Law, restrictions on location where a firearm may be possessed and other required subjects. The course also includes the required live fire and the firearms(s), and ammunition are provided.
Basic Pistol Class/Firearms Safety $145
This is the 2nd part of the course. This course is designed for individuals that have received their New York State Pistol Permit and have acquired their handgun. This is a hands on approach, learn how your Pistol or Revolver operates, Safe Gun Handling/Concealment, Fundamentals of shooting, Clearing Malfunctions, Dry Fire Practice, Live Fire Practice and learn how to care for your handgun. Justification for use of force under New York State Law Course includes: 4hrs classroom time and 4hr Range instruction by a certified Firearms Instructor.
This course is designed for individuals that have received their New York State pistol permit and have acquired their handgun. This is a hands-on approach. Learn how your pistol or revolver operates, safe gun handling/concealment, fundamentals of shooting, clearing malfunctions, dry-fire practice, live-fire practice, and learn how to care for your handgun.
Pistol Permit Course includes: Three days of classroom and range instruction by a certified firearms instructor. (Handgun is required for this class.)
HR-218 (RETIRED LAW ENFORCEMENT) ($75.00)
This course is designed for retired police and peace officers that required the use of a handgun in their line of duty. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) is a United States federal law, enacted in 2004, that allows two classes of persons—the "qualified law enforcement officer" and the "qualified retired law enforcement officer" —to carry a concealed firearm in any jurisdiction in the United States, regardless of any state or local law to the contrary, with certain exceptions.
Course includes: HR-218 overview, Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act overview, range qualification, and a professional photo ID (must be carried along with your retirement ID when carrying your handgun outside of your pistol permit jurisdiction).
(Handgun is required for this class.)
