The training requirements vary slightly depending on whether you want to be an unarmed security guard or be able to carry a firearm. Both types of security officers are required to complete the initial training which includes 8 hours of pre-assignment training and 16 hours of on-the-job training. After this initial training, unarmed security officers receive 8 hours of annual in-service training to maintain their registration status.
Armed security guards, however, need to complete 47 hours of firearms training as a part of their initial training. In addition to the annual in-service training, armed guards are also required to complete 8 hours of annual firearms training in order to maintain their registration status.
