How Do You Get Your Security Guard License?
Security officers are responsible for enforcing the rules established on the property they are assigned to patrol, protect the property and its patrons, and prevent and stop criminal activity. In order to become a security guard, there are a few requirements you need to meet, including:
- Applying to the Department of State
- Being at least 18 years old
- Completing the fingerprinting process
- Having no serious criminal offenses on record
- Having a valid driver's license or non-driver ID card
- Completing required training
Application Process & Fees
To become a security officer, you will first need to submit a completed Employee Statement and Security Guard Application. You will also need to disclose any serious criminal charges you may have on your record, and be able to prove that you have remained crime-free for at least 10 years. Registering to become a security guard also includes fees for:
- the initial application
- registration renewal
- fingerprinting, etc.

The training requirements vary slightly depending on whether you want to be an unarmed security guard or be able to carry a firearm. Both types of security officers are required to complete the initial training which includes 8 hours of pre-assignment training and 16 hours of on-the-job training. After this initial training, unarmed security officers receive 8 hours of annual in-service training to maintain their registration status.
Armed security guards, however, need to complete 47 hours of firearms training as a part of their initial training. In addition to the annual in-service training, armed guards are also required to complete 8 hours of annual firearms training in order to maintain their registration status.
